When David and I travel, we normally stay in a place in walking distance to the attractions we want to see, or at least close to public transportation.  In our strategy, we want a clean and nice accommodation, but we do not want to spend our money on a fancy hotel.  We want to be out experiencing the destination.  But on this trip, we were spending a night in 7 destinations and wanted to splurge on a nicer hotel in one of the locations.  David did lots of research and we chose to stay at Allegro Hotel in Ljubljana, Slovenia for an upscale treat.  We made a great choice!

Location of Allegro Hotel

Fantastic location!  The hotel is located in the Old Town on a pedestrian street that winds around the castle on the hill above.  If you turn right out of the hotel’s front door, you can hike up a trail that leading to the Ljubljana Castle.  If you turn left out of the hotel, you will meander along a pedestrian street with plenty of restaurants, shops, and people to watch.  Continuing down the main street of the Old Town, you will come to a second trail leading up to the castle, or a little further, a funicular will effortlessly whisk you to the top for a fee.  Allegro Hotel is one block from the Ljubljanica River where you can enjoy the Bridges of Plečnik and beautiful riverfront architecture.

Room

Our room was quite lovely.  Actually the layout was very clever.  In the picture, it appears there is a wall of windows, but the left window is actually the door.  You can cover it up with the sheers and curtains to give you privacy, but it felt very luxurious.  Our room included a mini fridge, an electric hot water kettle, desk, safe, and a large closet.  It was a clean and comfortable space with our own landing and sitting area outside the room.

Cost

The cost was very comparable for the area. It was a little more than we like to spend, but it was a great location in the Old Town and a treat for us.  The price list can be found on their website.

Breakfast

The room rate includes a delicious breakfast!  Breakfast features choices of meats, cheeses, eggs, sausage, yogurt, fruit, cereal, bread, and almost anything else you could want.  You can eat in the dining room downstairs, or enjoy the meal in the inviting courtyard.  When you factor in the cost of a complete breakfast for two, it helps justify a slightly higher upfront cost.

Other Noteworthy Items

All the staff was incredibly friendly!!  Our interactions with the helpful staff were very pleasant, whether while booking before our arrival, at the front desk, and during breakfast!  The staff even helped plan our eventual departure by checking train schedules for us.  This always makes a hotel stand out as a memorable experience.

Getting to the Hotel

When we arrived in Ljubljana from Bled, the bus dropped us off at the town’s combined bus/train station.  This was helpful because this let us familiarize ourselves with the area since we were leaving on a train to Zagreb, Croatia in a few days.  Allegro Hotel was within possible walking distance of the station, but we decided to take a short 5 minute taxi ride instead.  There are taxi’s all around, but from our research, we wanted to take a ride from Yellow Taxi or Metro Taxi.  We read that both these companies are very reputable.  David popped into a café and asked an employee if they could call a taxi for us.  The friendly driver arrived within minutes listening to none other than The Dixie Chicks, which made me feel at home.   A few minutes later, we arrived at our hotel.  If you are driving, the hotel offers parking for 10 Euros per day.

This quaint, 17 room hotel with European charm provided us a perfect stay.  We would recommend making Allegro Hotel your home away from home in Ljubljana!
